Vision and Mission Statements

Vision and mission statements are important components of every company, no matter of size.  Some companies may combine the vision and mission statement into one and call it "Credo" (see Johnson and Johnson Annual Report).  Many companies are striving to make sure that employees know what the company is all about and what is it that they do.

bulletWhat is a Vision Statement?
bulletA vision statement is a statement that provides where the company sees itself to be in the future.  In other words, "what does the company want to become." Typically, the vision statement is very general and does not change often.  It should be short, and be distinguished enough to differentiate the company from its competitor.
bulletA vision statement may NOT even offer the reader what does the company do or produce.   An example would be:  "Connecting people worldwide".   It really does not say much, however, it captures the attention if you read this as part of a company's profile.

bulletWhat is a Mission Statement?
bullet A mission statement is a statement that provides the stakeholder (employee, customers, suppliers, creditors, and investors) how the company is going to reach its vision.  In other words, mission statement should answer the question of, "what is our business."
bulletJust like vision statement, it should be broad.  A great mission statement should address all the stakeholders:  customers, employees, suppliers, creditors and investors.  Keep in mind that mission statement does not change often.
